West Ham chairman David Gold has announced that they have completed the signing of former Wigan Athletic midfielder Mohamed Diame.
Speaking on Twitter, Gold announced “I am pleased to announce that we have just the Wigan central midfielder 25 year old Mohamed Diame on a three year contract.”
The highly-rated Senegal international was released by Wigan at the end of last season, meaning West Ham just had to beat off competition for his signature to complete a free transfer. West Ham also confirmed the signing with a statement on their Twitter page: “West Ham United are delighted to announce that the club have reached an agreement to sign Senegal international midfielder Mohamed Diame.”
The free signing of Diame looks to be quite a coup for The Hammers with Liverpool and Newcastle also said to have been interested in acquiring his services. “Diame’s a great signing for West Ham on a free. Great bit of business that” tweeted Doron Salomon.
West Ham fan and writer Martin Saunders is also pleased with the signing, tweeting “Mohamed Diame is a quality signing for #whufc – gives us some steel in the midfield. Now sign a striker Big Sam! #notkevindavies.”
This appears to be one of the many transfer stories that have broken on Twitter with many high profile people in the game using the site to alert fans of news. Eden Hazard famously announced his recent transfer to Chelsea on Twitter which could be a sign of things to come.
