Usually first for breaking news, Sky Sports were this evening left slightly in the cold after Swindon Town announced the appointment of Kevin MacDonald as their new manager, replacing Paolo Di Canio at the County Ground.

Sky Sports News' Twitter handle announced; "Sky Sources: Swindon to name Kevin MacDonald as new manager tomorrow #SSN", thinking that they were ahead of their rivals in breaking the latest developments from Swindon only for the club to inform them on Twitter that they had already made the announcement. In reply to Sky's tweet, @Official_STFC tweeted; "@SkySportsNews We just have!", having already taken to the micro-blogging site to confirm MacDonald's appointment.

While Sky's information was correct in terms of personnel, Swindon moved quickly to correct the broadcaster in a very clever move of digital one-upmanship. Sky won't be left to sore from the incident given that they have a pretty good track record in breaking sporting news, to say the least, but this instance may well encourage them to double-check with their sources before taking to Twitter next time.
