Seven Cameroon athletes go missing during Olympics
Seven athletes from the Cameroon Olympic team have gone missing in London.
Sky’s Olympic correspondent Orla Chennaoui (@skyorla) broke the news just a few hours ago: ‘Seven athletes from Cameroon who were in London for the Games have gone AWOL. Suspected to be trying to stay for economic reasons.’
The seven include five male boxers, a woman’s footballer and a male swimmer.
Reserve team goalkeeper Drusille Ngako was the first to disappear after her team left for Coventry for their final warm up match against New Zealand.
The other six including swimmer Paul Ekane Edingue and boxers Thomas Essomba, Christian Donfack Adjoufack, Abdon Mewoli, Blaise Yepmou Mendouo and Serge Ambomo disappeared after they were all eliminated from the games on Sunday night.
Cameroon mission head David Ojong confirmed their disappearances in a letter to the Cameroon sports ministry:
‘What began as rumour has finally turned out to be true.
‘Seven Cameroonian athletes who participated at the 2012 London Olympic Games have disappeared from the Olympic Village", he added.
Ayoola Ajisafe (@AyoolaAji) finds the whole situation humorous:’ LOL Cameroon athletes have "disappeared" while in Britain for the Olympics, meaning that theyve gone to hide & try to stay in the country.’
Northern Belle (@northernn_belle) hope the athletes are ok:’ My heart goes out to those Cameroon athletes who ran away. I hope they are safe and find a better life. Country must be bad if they risk it.’
I am Reynolds (@IAmReynolds) says:’One way to get in I guess… “7 Cameroon athletes have absconded while in Britain for the Olympics, officials say.’
Yung Voldemort (@rawiya) believes it was eventually going to happen:’ twas only a matter of time. RT @BreakingNews: 7 Cameroonathletes have absconded while in Britain for the Olympics.’
John O’Farrell (@mrjohnofarrell) thinks the athletes are still competing:’ Cameroon athletes currently ahead in the Olympic Hide and Seek event.
