Newcastle complete signing of Vurnon Anita from Ajax
Newcastle United have completed the signing of Vurnon Anita from Ajax.
The 23-year-old Dutch international has joined the Toon army on a five-year-deal for a fee believed to be around the £6.7 million mark.
Originally from Curacao, Anita has played at both Right-back and in midfield for the Dutch giants, and becomes Alan Pardew’s 4th signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Romain Amalfitano, Gael Bigirimana and Curtis Good.
Anita told the club’s website, “"I won almost everything in Holland so the step was not difficult to make. Now I think we can also win trophies with Newcastle and it's time to do that.”
"In the Premier League especially, every game is tough so it can help me also to grow in my football skills."
Anita said that compatriot Tim Krul was instrumental in bringing him to St. James’s Park. “He told me to join Newcastle, and said it was a very nice club with great supporters and everything is nice and that he would like me to come here” Anita said.
Manager Alan Pardew told the BBC, “"He has come through the Ajax youth system which is world renowned for bringing up players the right way, and I am sure he will fit seamlessly into the squad of players we have here.”
Michael Cox (@zonalmarking) tweeted of the Anita signing: “Vurnon Anita another good signing for Newcastle. Young but a fair bit of experience, tenacious but good technically, very versatile.”
Jamie Sanderson (@Younggunsblog) tweeted “Vurnon Anita another sensible Newcastle buy. Strong, rugged, versatile. Fits philosophy. Reaping rewards of trusting their scouts.”
Newcastle play Spurs on Saturday with Anita expected to be in the squad.
