Maccarinelli apologises after drugs ban
Former World Cruiserweight Champion Enzo Maccarinelli has apologised after being handed a six-month ban for a doping offence.
The 31-year-old tested positive for methylhexaneamine after beating Shane McPhilbin for the British cruiserweight title in March.
“[I] apologise to everyone involved in boxing for any stain on our great sport,” the Welshman told the BBC.
“I wish to state that this substance was in no way used to gain any advantage in the ring or enhance my performance. And while I appreciate that it may look that way, I would certainly never cheat or cut corners in my preparation.”
Maccarinelli, whose WBO reign was ended in two rounds by David Haye in 2008, said he “naively” used a product containing the banned substance. He has also voluntarily vacated the British title so that McPhilbin may “re-challenge” for it.
Unsurprisingly there was plenty of reaction on social media over his ban.
Alan Cheatle (@ABCheatle) tweeted: “Enzo Maccarinelli has tested positive for methylhexaneamine. Why oh why do people never learn? TAKE NOTHING however innocent it may seem.”
Whil Martin Cullum (@martinnrfc) simply put: “Enzo Maccarinelli....what a waster #boxing #cheat”
Mark Ortega (@MarkEOrtega) was more sympathetic though. He posted: “Enzo Maccarinelli, I applaud you for coming up with a response to your + test. Betro, Peterson, still waiting on your explanations #boxing”
The Welshman has struggled to beat anyone of note since his loss to Haye, something not lost on many boxing fans.
Mark Yates (@misteryates) tweeted: “Enzo Maccarinelli banned for six months due to banned substance – career been on a downward spiral since Haye schooled him back in 2008.”
Bazz Barrett (@bazzbarrett) asked: “So Enzo Maccarinelli has been banned for failing a drugs test. Is he the worst advertisement for performance enhancing drugs ever?”
Many fans were at least impressed with Maccarinelli’s seemingly honest assessment of the situation and subsequent apology.
David Joel (@joely42) said: “Everybody (including Terry and Ferdinand) should read the boxer Enzo Maccarinelli apology for failing a drug test. A grown up response.”
While boxer Jody Meikle (@jodymeikle) wondered what happens to McPhilbin, Maccarinelli’s opponent: “maccarinelli banned 4 test following win over mcphilbin. Why shane not reinstated as champ rather than fighting for vacant title #boxing”
Maccarinelli can return to boxing on October 18, but he will have a long way to go to rebuild a career that once promised so much.
