Within months of breaking into the side at 22, Kumar Sangakkara became one of Sri Lanka's most influential players: a highly talented left-handed strokemaker, a slick wicketkeeper and a sharp-eyed strategist. His arrival was relatively unexpected, for his domestic performances were relatively modest, but the selectors' judgement was immediately justified as he starred in his first tournament, the Singer Series 2000 against South Africa and Pakistan, as a wicketkeeper-cum-batsman.

His arrival ended the long-term search for a No. 3 batsman to fill the void left since the retirement of Asanka Gurusinha. A charismatic personality and an astute thinker - he is training to be a lawyer between tours - Sangakarra was tipped for the captaincy from an early age and in March 2009, aged 31, he finally took over the reins from Mahela Jayawardene, a close friend, having been vice-captain for three years.

His astonishing consistency with the bat consistent reached new heights in July 2006 when he added a world record 624 for the third wicket against South Africa at Colombo, his share being a career-best 287. He followed that with back-to-back centuries on tour in New Zealand, twin unbeaten double-centuries against Bangladesh, and a glorious 192 in defeat against Australia, to confirm his standing among the best wicketkeeper-batsmen of all time and take him to No 1 position in the official ICC Test Batsmen Rankings.

Kumar & Yehali Sangakkara along with Mrs. Anula Jayaratne, wife of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, launched the Anlene Asthi Shakthi Kantha Shakthi Movement at Galle Face Green on 27th November. Through Anlene Asthi Shakithi Kantha Shakthi, Kumar & Yehali together with Anlene bring awareness on the importance of bone health and mobility. More than 11,000 people attended the event during the course of the day, enjoying the fun activities, whilst learning about the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise for good bone health. Kumar and Yehali interacted, mingled with the participants and went through some of the activities. Due to the torrential downpour and strong winds the activities had to be concluded earlier than planned. Look forward to more such activities in the future with Kumar and Yehali continuing their support for bone health and mobility.
