North London Premier League club Arsenal today became the first UK sports team to reach and surpass 2 million followers on Twitter and, in doing so, became the "4th most-followed sports team globally after @FCBarcelona @RealMadrid and @Lakers," according to Lewis Wiltshire, Head of Sport for Twitter UK.

Arsenal took to Twitter to thank its followers for helping them to reach the social landmark while announcing that they are to run a special competition to reward their 2 million strong following for the achievement. @Arsenal tweeted: "Thanks for helping @Arsenal reach TWO MILLION followers! We're giving away two signed shirts very soon: http://www.arsenal.com/arsenal2m #Arsenal2m".

By following the hashtag #Arsenal2m two fans will be given signed shirts by a player of their choice.
